| City Island, NY - Sunday, Monday, Tuesday July 6, 7, 8 After making good time we ended up calling it a day at the City Island Yacht club where we picked up a mooring. A mooring is similar to an anchor in that it is made of lead or steel and they are sunk to the bottom with a chain and then rope attached. They tend to be more secure than an anchor due to the sheer weight of the mooring itself. When at a yacht club or marina that offers moorings, generally as part of the fee, one receives launch service. A launch is a small power boat, usually seats between 6 to 14 passangers. You radio the launch on the VHF radio and within minutes your launch awaits you. The launch pulls up to your boat and takes you ashore, or wherever you may want to go. |

| We were happy to be back in sail boat territory, which City Island certainly is. In the 18th century, the island was purchased from the Indians by a group of developers planning to make it a rival to New York for world trade. The hoped-for trade hub didn’t materialize, but a major yachting center did. Part of New York City’s Bronx borough, City Island is devoted to boating services. It is a self contained community (reminded me of a small neighborhood in NYC), and is connected to the mainland by a single bridge. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| On Monday we took advantage of the island’s reputation as a “fitting-out” port and arranged to have the mast work done. We needed to replace the tri-color and anchor light swiped off at the Cape May Canal bridge. We headed around the island to Consolidated Yachts. The rigger at Consolidated knew his skill well and in under an hour had the problem diagnosed and felt confident it could all be taken care of in a day. He was right, on Tuesday, before noon the parts had been ordered, shipped, and installed and we were good as new. |

| On Tuesday, we had a visit from our friends, Jill Hart and her son Kenny, who live in Chappaqua, NY. We enjoyed the afternoon with them and had a nice visitThat evening, my sister Mary Theresa and her husband, Robert, and my niece Rebecca and her fiancé, Jeff, joined us for dinner. They drove in from Oceanside, which is on Long Island. We had a nice visit with them and enjoyed a local Mexican food restaurant. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
