Boothbay Harbor
Continued
Boothbay is a busy summer resort town with natural beauty and plenty of tourist attractions.  The small town is so packed with tourists, it takes on a carnival like atmosphere.  We found plenty to do in town and again treated ourselves to lobster at the local lobster co-op in town.  They let you select your lobsters and clams, they steam them right there, then you take them back to your boat.  We boiled some butter and had a superb meal on board Sunday, enjoying the fruits of the local area.

We experienced an event at the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club with which we had not previously been familiar.  It is the tradition of setting off the cannon at sunset.  Boy were we surprised the first evening it went off.  It is a small cannon  that is fired precisely at sunset. (Later when we arrived in Camden, ME we found the Camden Yacht Club fires their cannon at 8:00 a.m. every morning).  We’re finding the traditions vary amongst yacht clubs as to the old maritime traditions.

Another Lobster Dinner
On Tuesday we hiked up to the Marine Resources Aquarium, a research facility sponsored by the Maine Dept. of Marine Resources, set on a point with picturesque views of Boothbay Harbor.  The aquarium majors in the business of lobster fishing, but has a variety of marine animals and two terrific touch tanks, one with local star fish, sea cucumbers, horseshoe and hermit crabs, and other local marine life. touchtank  The second tank has skates and dog sharks, all craving the human touch to the delight of visitors. Monica spent several hours just hanging out at these tanks touching and observing.

The hike back to the yacht club was so pleasant, with the pine trees and lush greenery, it reminded us of a hike in the Colorado mountains.  We came back to the yacht club and were joined that evening by Kristin, David, and Allie Brett, friends from St. Petersburg, who have a cottage on an island in the area.

Blue Lobster
Our plan was to leave Boothbay Harbor early Wednesday morning, so we got an early start at 6:30 a.m., pulled up to the yacht club docks to take on water and pulled away to head out for Rockland Harbor.  Just as we pulled out, we noticed fog rolling in.  We grabbed our mooring and sat out the fog, not getting underway until after 11:00 a.m.
Boothbay Harbor, ME – the Midcoast – Saturday Aug 9
On Saturday morning we left Tenants Harbor in Penobscot Bay, (
